Connecting Telenet Router Provided by Tata Indicom to Linksys Wireless Router WRT120N for STATIC IP

Some fine day I had myself configured a brand new Linksys WRT120N to use my home's 3 pcs and 3 laptops all on same network and share the same internet connection too.

But when my tata indicom net slowed down, the tech support on 60607070 made me reconfigure it and insert the IP address in the Telenet Router which is provided by TATA Indicom.

And hence rendering my old settings in Linksys WRT120N useless. So here are few basics I have learnt in my mind-wrangling and my wrangling with my computers and routers in the past two days (In a desperate attempt to get wireless internet on my laptop working again.)

BASICS:
1. A router/computer have either STATIC I.P. or Dynamic I.P. (DHCP). This instruction is for STATIC IP users.
2. I.P. is the 'name' your computer/router uses to get on the internet. Something like your email login id.
3. You should ask your TATA Indicom or internet service provider whether 'you' use a static i.p. or dynamic i.p.. For e.g. I use a STATIC I.P and that means same ip address everytime I log in. Which is more secure and better than dynamic i.p. If you have dynamic i.p. then its not bad , it just means your computer/router uses a different i.p. address everytime it tries to log into a network. This 'different' i.p. address depends on what is available at the time when you log in.
4. In case you have a static i.p. Then you must have these parameters with you: I.P. Address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway, DNS Primary, DNS Secondary. You should keep these noted as they are 'yours' and if you don't have them then your internet service provider will provide it to you.

HOW TO CONFIGURE:
Note: This works only for Linksys WRT120N and Telenet Router. Incase you have a different model of Linksys wireless/wired router this might work but not sure. However the science remains the same irrespective of brand or model. You can always read what I have to say, recognize a pattern and apply it to your instruments. This method is only for STATIC IP. For Dynamic IP, this exactly won't work. You will have to work around a bit.

1. Disconnect Telenet from Linksys or from computer.
2. Disconnect Linksys from computer.
3. On your computer, go to Network Connections from Start Menu in Windows Xp. If you are using Vista or Windows 7, go to Network and Sharing Center. Click on Change Adapter Settings.
4. You will see one LAN icon. There might be two if you have more than one LAN cards in your computer - in that case you should know which one is for internet and which one is for other LAN connection.
5. Right click on LAN icon, go to properties. Scroll down and select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) or Internet Protocol 4.
6. Click on Obtain an IP Configuration automatically. and Obtain DNS server address automatically.
7. Press ok. Close internet properties. Restart computer.
-----------After Configuring computer-------------------
8. Connect Telenet router to the computer.
9. Go to Internet Explorer/Google Chrome/Firefox and enter "192.168.1.1" in the address bar and press enter.
10. Enter username and password both as "admin".
11. In the left pane, Go to Management>Setting>Restore Default. In the right side of page, press on Restore Default. It should reboot the Telenet router.
12. Once after the Telenet router has reset,it will automatically refresh the page.
13. In the left pane, Go to Advanced Setup>WAN. In the right side of page, select all the remove tick boxes and press remove on the bottom.
14. Press Add to add a new setting after removing all old ones. Then enter these options and only these options in the subsequent screens and keep pressing Next or Save. VPI:0, VCI: 32, UBR without PCR, Mac Encapsulation, LLCP/SNAP-Bridging, Enter the I.P. address details you have.
15. Save/Reboot.
16. After it has rebooted, disconnect the Telenet router from computer. Switch it off.
----------------After Configuring Telenet Router--------------------
17. Connect Linksys router to the computer. Make sure you are connecting wire in 1/2/3/4 slot on the Linksys router and NOT in internet slot.
18. On the router, there will be a reset button. Press it for about 10 seconds till all the lights on router glow up and then release it.
19. Give it some time to restart. Once done open Internet Explorer.
20. Enter "192.168.1.1" in address bar. Keep username blank, password as "admin"
21. On the first page make sure these settings are done. Internet Connection: Auto DHCP, Local I.P Address: 192.168.0.1 .
22. Press on save settings. The page will show waiting time then go off.
23. After 1 minute, in the address bar of IE, enter 192.168.0.1.
24. Save settings. And close the window.
25. Switch off Linksys router and keep it connected to computer.
-------------------After Configuring Linksys Router---------------------
26. Connect the "Internet" slot on the Linksys router to the Telenet router.
27. Switch on both simultaneously.
28. Tada!!! You are done doing major configurations.
29. Now to add other computers, simply connect their LAN cables to the extra slots on Linksys Router. WRT120N has 4 in total. And 5th one is for internet connection.
30. To configure Wireless you can go to "192.168.0.1", go to the wireless tab and work your way out.

Hope some lost soul will some day find this very useful...

Cheers! To the expired warranty on linksys and to the dummies on tata indicom helpline... And to addiction to internet.
